This time last week, well before class, my boyfriend and I decided to spend our anniversary doing something different. We’ve been talking about visiting Luray Caverns for a few years, but driving to Virginia, exploring the cave and making it back in time for me to go to class was not possible. We instead decided to drive out to western Maryland and visit Crystal Grottoes . I was nervous, as it was my first time going underground and into a cave. When we got down, there were the typical stalactites and stalagmites and the darkness. It was also freezing! Well, it was 54 degrees, which the owner explains it as being warm in the winter and cold in the summer. We weren’t allowed to touch any of the formations because the oils on our hands would stunt and prevent any further growth of the formations. We also saw some tree roots hanging from the ceiling from the tree above ground. Since it hadn’t rained much, the ground wasn’t too wet, but there was enough to make a slight amount of mud. Also, we were constantly dripped on while walking, but it was a great time! The entire tour lasted a little more than half an hour, and we got to see a lot of formations. (lights were strategically installed by spelunkers using a light switch system) Here are some pictures from our trip:
